We first visited a small local site in San Pancho where we learned how a certified volunteer can operate a camp and begin to teach and educate both local and international volunteers to assist with operating a turtle conservation camp. It was very informative to know how local developers, home owners, tourists, volunteers and non profit groups work together to ensure the location where turtle mamas lay their eggs are safe and secured. We were impressed with organization of the small camp in San Pancho and participated in the release at sunset joined by volunteers and supporters.

Our second visit was at the Campamento Tortuguero Boca de Tomates which is in the Marina Vallarta region of the Bay. This is a more established site with outdoor workshop space for new volunteers and tourists to first learn about the camp and conservation work being done prior to the release of baby turtles. The camp also provides simple and basic housing for volunteers who are assisting on a more permanent or monthly basis, including students who are doing research on marine conservation and turtle protection. The camp operates on donations and support from local businesses and surrounding resorts and developers. The camp is located in a beautiful part of the Bay, surrounded by mangroves and away from major structures.

Isa Mundo committed to support both camps and will be working in partnership this year with other conservation groups to assist the important work being done in the Bay of Banderas region. We would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone Happy Holidays and all the best in the coming year. Despite our continued partnerships with various organizations in Mexico, Latin America and Philippines, our collaboration took on a different approach in 2023. We took on more in-kind donations and exchange of Human Resources to complete projects rather than focusing on grants writing and fundraising events.

We realize and acknowledge that many global events transpired, and continue to, this year which left many of our volunteers, members and supporters struggling to heal during these challenging times. From wars to natural disasters to political unrests and protests on better labour conditions, climate change and individual rights - 2023 revealed to us that we need to continue our work to support those less fortunate, provide equal access to programs and services and amplify the voices of those who are silenced. As each year passes - we are even more grateful to our supporters, volunteers and partners who have contributed to our past and present projects.

We want to wish everyone all the best this Holiday Season and a peaceful, healthy and prosperous 2024. We are very excited and committed to meet and engage with local non profit organizations that focus on marine conservation and turtle rescue and release programs. Over the pat 5 years, Isa Mundo has been approached by various local community members and groups in the Bahia de Banderas region looking for support and partnership to continue the important work and efforts that have been established by committed and passionate peoples.

The Banderas Bay region has been a nesting ground for turtles for years and turtle mamas continue to lay their eggs all over the beaches of Banderas and their turtle hatchings make the challenging journey from beach to ocean until they return again to the same place they were born. This process is challenging enough with natural predators, waves and human influenced changes in marine ecosystem. In addition, the Bay of Banderas region continues to progress with increased population and resort and housing developments that take away protected areas for turtles to lay their eggs and for babies to hatch and make their journey to the water.

But through the efforts and commitment of community members and groups, education and promotion of the importance of protecting turtles are beginning to make a difference. Resorts and developers are collaborating with ecological groups to set aside protected areas. Non profit organizations have set up tours and camps for tourists, businesses and schools to visit turtle camps and participate in release programs to see learn and see first hand the work that entails to save turtles in the region.

Isa Mundo will visit these organizations next month and will commit to support and perhaps launch our very own Isa Mundo Turtle Release Programs in the region. We look forward to meeting our friends doing this work and we thank them in advance for engaging and hosting us. We will provide an update while on site in beautiful Mexico.

Thank you / Gracias!

Isa Mundo Foundationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00503996027874789374noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-260093931512949695.post-67105422316614308152023-09-22T23:54:00.002-07:002023-10-22T20:59:56.557-07:00Disaster Relief Appeal - Red Cross Partnership

The month of September saw two natural disasters that resulted in unimaginable loss that will impact communities for years to come. On September 8, a deadly earthquake of 6.8 magnitude struck Morocco’s Atlas Mountain region killing more than 3000 people and injuring thousands. For a week, remote villages remain without aid due to challenging road conditions.

A few days later on September 11, Storm Daniel fell on northeastern Libya causing dams to break which devastated two cities killing an estimated 11,000 with thousands more missing. The city of Derna was hardest hit with a quarter of the city washed away by the water and entire neighbourhoods destroyed. With damaged roads and lack of communication due to power lines down, rescue workers and foreign aid volunteers have faced many challenges to help those in need.

Isa Mundo has committed to raise funds in partnership with Red Cross to support those who have lost everything in both Morocco and Libya. We are aware of the complex political situations where natural disasters affect many communities and families and Isa Mundo will continue to support communities where we have capacity to do so. We chosen to partner with Red Cross over the years because the organization and its local Red Crescent teams worldwide have their own staff and volunteers who are trained to respond to large-scale disaster operations.

There are two ways to help support our fundraising efforts: 1) donate to Isa Mundo Foundation by clicking our Donate link; 2) donate directly to Red Cross and choose Morocco, Libya or both to assists the organization’s efforts to raise funds. When donating to Isa Mundo, we will collect all funds which are then matched by Red Cross. But also, their situations globally have not been positive and in 2023, still lack access to clean water, safe housing, education, socio-economic opportunities and basic human rights that are taken for granted by non Indigenous peoples in the developed world. We have chosen the Cariboo Region (Rail Lake) to construct the space and invite other start up companies, established businesses and local contractors to partner and collaborate with us. The location posed challenges in ordering supplies, shipping materials and bringing contractors due to the distance from our office and location in Vancouver. But nonetheless, we committed to finishing the project and will invite local organizations to work with us in the future to serve and support communities in the Cariboo Region.

We are thankful for companies such as Rohe Homes who partnered with us and their interest in piloting a project in the region that is affordable, mobile, and a strong focus on sustainable homes. We are grateful for another start up company Rainstick Shower (Sean and Alisha) who brought forth a shower system that will allow homes to use 80% less water and energy. We also want to thank OGO Toilets who partnered with us to try one of their sustainable sanitation composting systems that is oderless and created for off-grid living. We will assess these products as a group with the hope of bringing them to communities we support globally that are in need of simple sanitation systems, water conservation and energy consumption.

To learn more about our partners, click on the links below:

Rohe Homes - Lock Up Ready Home Kits Delivered to Your Location

Rainstick Shower - How Rainstick Reduces Water Waste

OGO Toilets - Sustainable Sanitation Comes Easy

We will keep you all updated as we progress and complete this project in the Carbioo Region.
Isa Mundo Foundationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00503996027874789374noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-260093931512949695.post-33262296561812099692023-05-18T16:43:00.000-07:002023-06-11T11:22:52.361-07:00Back in Casa Connor / Pasitos de Luz

Isa Mundo Director and volunteers returned to Casa Connor for the first time since the start of the pandemic in 2020. What we witnessed were constructions of new facilities for volunteers and staff, an impressive therapeutic outdoor pool, communal gardens to grow vegetables and new equipment for the children to improve their development and therapy.

We were welcomed by General Direct, Arturo Ayala and his wonderful staff, and of course, the children and their families. As described by ERA:

"... is a non-profit organization committed to reducing unnecessary electronic waste by recycling and repurposing used electronics. We work with local companies to repurpose used electronics and IT equipment in a safe and secure manner. Our team works with community charities to provide repurpose computers and electronics to those in need."

ERA donations to Isa Mundo have travelled all over the globe, from the Philippines, to Peru, to Mexico, to Dominican Republic and to India. Along the way, we have met passionate volunteers at ERA who are committed to providing much needed technology to the less fortunate but also ensuring that less waste end up in landfills by rescuing and refurbishing used laptops, monitors and other devices that are still of value and operational.

Due to the pandemic, donations of technological devices have paused over the last 3 years which in turn, decreased the access of much needed laptops to supply our Isa Mundo Education Centre in the Philippines and Mexico. But we are hopeful that ERA will recover in 2023 at the same level of donations pre-pandemic to continue to support organizations across Canada and the world.

ERA highlighted Isa Mundo in 2022. As most of you know, our Founder and Director, Paul Lorilla was born and raised in this small village and grew up surrounded by rice fields and fish farms. He spent many of childhood years in the elementary school and church grounds studying, farming and playing basketball. When Isa Mundo was launched in 2006, his first projects were in Bambang, with Maligayang Paslit being one of the first projects he funded and supported that focused on having an annual one day celebration for children and students in his village. This pre-Christmas gathering allow less fortunate children and families to have a day of games, singing, food and gifts and to be together in safe space.

Paul was back in Bambang December 2022 to contribute and support the celebration and provided the food to 300+ children and family members. Maligayang Paslit is a project close to our hearts as we know that the sharing and focus on children and youth in this village, is what inspired our Founder to launch Isa Mundo.

We hope to continue to support this celebration annually and ensure the children and families in Bambang have one special day to look forward to on behalf of Isa Mundo.

Isa Mundo Foundationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00503996027874789374noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-260093931512949695.post-3945417670082923372023-01-02T17:24:00.005-08:002023-01-03T19:41:49.502-08:00People and the Sea

Isa Mundo was able to meet a representative from People and the Sea in the beautiful island of Malapascua. The People and the Sea (PEPSEA) focuses on empowering Filipinos and visitors to protect the sea and marine life while uplifting the lives of less fortunate islanders in the region. This include programs that support sustainable fishing management, waste reduction, youth education and economic resilience.

As climate change affects coastal communities worldwide, PEPSEA looks locally to re-connect Filipinos to their environment and the importance of conservation. The organization focuses on community based needs to ensure solutions and strategies are implementable and have long term impacts. Isa Mundo was also impressed with the organization's 4 stage approach: Pilot Phase; Monitor and Update; Current Status and Scale Up. We met with Daff Binobo, Site Manager, who reminded us that this 'cyclical approach keeps their core elements of a date driven, holistic, and collaborative effort at the forefront". It also allows engagement and participation of everyone in the community along with external supporters when necessary. Everyone is accountable from start to finish. PEPSEA and its programs affects over 5,000 local islanders each year and continues to work with other local islanders in the region.

Isa Mundo is committed to find ways to support PEPSEA and collaborate on projects and other initiatives, including its Eco Heroes program. This program is part of a collective conservation education for all ages but mostly focussed on local children and youth to develop future environmental and conservation leaders. An additional project is to support local schools in creating a physical space to address the need for segregation and proper waste disposal which also acts as a space for awareness and education for students.

We look forward to brainstorming with PEPSEA and its members to find ways to progress their projects and work in partnership in 2023. In Canada, the low social assistance rates are key factors in so many Canadians relying on Food Banks. As an example, Food Banks Canada stated that in world class cities in the Greater Vancouver, BC region- there has been a 29% increase in accessing food bank services from 2021-2022 resulting in over 1000 people a month registering to use food banks. We need to support all local Food Banks across the country and locally where we live and work to ensure everyone has access to basic food for sustenance and proper nutritious foods for those who have dietary concerns.

Since the pandemic began, Isa Mundo has continued to support food banks in Mexico and Philippines by donating and working with local organizations and partners who shifted our education projects to focus on basic survival initiatives such as access to food, medicine and hygiene supplies. We also began working with local organizations in Vancouver such as Kids Safe Society and Salvation Army to support lunch programs for kids and students who do not have access to 3 meals a day by providing much needed ingredients to make nutritious food and providing volunteers who are able to deliver them.

As we head into the busy holiday season, we encourage all our member and volunteers to think about various ways to support food banks but also, to think about the bigger challenge and problem of food insecurity and its root causes. This organization was founded in 2006 in the town the locals call, San Pancho and was launched as a space to teach arts and crafts to local youth and citizens. But with commitment and passion from volunteers, expats, tourists, businesses and other non profit organizations, Entreamigos is now an important institution that has a strong focus on environmentalism, education, families and community development.

This evident in its large facility that has been renovated and designed from mostly recycled and re-claimed materials. The NDTC was announced in June 2021 as part of the Government of Canada's commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action #80: We call upon
the federal government, in collaboration with Aboriginal peoples, to
establish, as a statutory holiday, a National Day for Truth and
Reconciliation to honour Survivors, their families, and communities, and
ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of
residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation
process.

September 30th is also known as Orange Shirt Day. It is a time to recognize, raise awareness and create meaningful discussions on the effects of residential schools on survivors, their families and communities. It is also a time to reflect, remember and continue to learn about Indigenous cultures, languages, heritage, traditions and most importantly, the contributions of Indigenous Peoples in Canada.

Isa Mundo Foundation members and volunteers - from Ottawa to Toronto to Edmonton and Vancouver - donated to the Orange Shirt Society, volunteered at Indigenous led organizations, attended gatherings to support survivors and community members and committed to develop various resources and tools in their workplaces to educate colleagues on the history of residential schools. We are aware that these actions will not be enough to heal deep wounds from 100+ years of marginalization and oppression against Indigenous peoples but we all need to take steps to accept and recognize the truth and to listen to oral stories and teachings of Indigenous Elders and survivors. We have a shared history and Canada's narrative is not all positive. And for non-Indigenous peoples, we need to understand and accept that we all have a responsibility as individuals and as a collective to progress reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples on Turtle Island.

To learn more about the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, visit the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation.

To learn more about and contribute to the annual Orange Shirt Day, visit the Orange Shirt Society.

Isa Mundo Foundationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00503996027874789374noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-260093931512949695.post-57616550330321176832021-08-09T13:28:00.039-07:002021-08-21T13:33:29.485-07:00International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples

On

Inspired by a small donation we completed in January 2021, we have had interests in expanding and continuing this support to our existing schools and education centres. It would also provide much needed financial support to students who may not have necessary funds to purchase school materials, uniforms and food.

The TEF will be working closely with our schools, teachers, administrators and volunteers in Mexico, Philippines, Peru, Guatemala and Nicagua where our Isa Mundo Education Centres are located. We hope to support 4-5 students per month ranging from $100-$500 CDN.
